THE CARLOS DEL JUNCO BAND
"Rather like........Nicolo Pagannini"
That one tiny little instrument could so dominate the emotions and captivate the imagination of a multitude of music lovers is the hallmark of a virtuoso. That one man should be capable of surrounding himself with the top echelon of Canadian instrumentalists and accompanists reflects his brilliance as an Artist and the profound degree of respect with which he is held.
In response to the oft-repeated query, "Is Carlos coming back again this year?", The Hohner Harmonica World Champion in Jazz and Blues returns to our City for another musical love-fest with his legion of enthusiastic fans.
Originally from Cuba - "del Junco" translates into "of the reeds" -, Carlos del Junco has made his home in Canada, and he has made an enormous mark on the Canadian and international music scene. Playing the harmonica since age 14, Carlos developed a unique technique in creating his own inimitable style. Applying this consummate command of the instrument to his abundant creativity, diverse musical interests, whimsy and sense of fun, del Junco is the most engaging and awe-inspiring of performing Artists.
His new C.D.,
"Blues Mongrel ", is a return to his earlier works such as "Big Boy" and his début
live album - which were both collections of primarily Blues-based material - while
maintaining that characteristic del Junco soulfulness. It is an "eclectic mixture
of music," describes del Junco, "designed to reach out and expand into new markets."
On the playlist of many radio stations, this latest recording is filled with instrumentals
with strong Latin influences; a few Jazz standards with vocals by pop vocalist
Jane Siberry; some incredible guitar work by Kevin Breit; all of which allows
Carlos to expand his musical horizons and challenge the very limits of his instrument.
Rather like the what the great genius of the violin, Nicolo Paganini, is so renowned
for.

THE JIMMY BOWSKILL QUARTET
"The Child is Father to the Man"
At twelve year's old, and not much bigger than the white Fender Stratocaster electric guitar that he likes to play, Jimmy Bowskill is having an impact way beyond his weight class.
Much like a precocious Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Jimmy is being trotted out to numerous congregations of the élite in the Canadian Blues music scene, and giving them a revealing glimpse into the future of the Art, and the past from whence it came. "A sixty-year old man in a twelve-year old body", quoted one observer. "A young player with 'THE feel' ", observed another. ".....beautiful, just beautiful", repeated Bruce Coburn over and over again. "Jimmy Bowskill is life-changingly good", was Colin Linden's response.
And now Bowskill is in the studio - recording the original compositions he has written with his father - in the company of such sidemen as Jack de Keyzer, Jeff Healey and Donny "Mr. Downchild" Walsh. In true "everything old is new again" tradition, Jimmy has touched the heart and soul of the Blues music world with his authenticity, his respect, his talent, his determination and his love. How he will harness his extraordinary gifts and apply them to his chosen Art is still to be determined. In-as-much as "the child is father to the man", it is an adventure that we all may have the privilege of sharing with this Twenty-First century Amadeus. THE JIMMY BOWSKILL QUARTET PERFORMS IN THE GREAT CANADIAN GUITARISTS CONCERT SERIES AND IS SPONSORED BY CREDIT BUREAU COLLECTIONS AND COMPUTER TRAINING AND CONSULTING.
THE JOHN-ALLEN BRIDGES TRIO
The organ trios of the nineteen-fifties and sixties were some of the funkiest musical ensembles on the nightclub scene in any major city. Based on the inimitable sound of the legendary Hammond Organ and the equally legendary Leslie Tone Cabinet, these trios included bass or guitar and, of course, drums to create their funky grooves.
John-Allen Bridges has resurrected this musical model and in the company of Mark Hathaway - on the modern day equivalent of the Hammond-Leslie combination - and Chris Lesso - on drums - has put together a classic organ trio . Exploring the Jazz-Funk-Rhythm and Blues-Soul repertoire that these historic combos were so successful with, this trio is a Booker T. and The M.G. s retrospective with contemporary musical ideas and concepts; a one foot in the past, one foot in the future "Colossus of Rhodes" ! THE JOHN-ALLEN BRIDGES TRIO PERFORMS IN THE SHOWCASE HURONIA CONCERT SERIES.
WAYNE BUTTERY & THE GROOVE PROJECT
Wayne Buttery is a Big Man. And he is going to be big at the Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival VIII with his latest creation, "Wayne Buttery and The Groove Project", one of the most exciting new bands to come out of Huronia. And in case you're thinking that because Wayne is big, the boys in the band are small .....think again. Bob Federer, Dennis King, Charlie Hinkel, John Shand, Russ Strathdee, Paul Robillard, Larry Kurtz........ these Artists are major talents in the Huronia Jazz and Blues scene. Bob Federer alone has worked in the recording studio with such Jazz music luminaries as Oscar Peterson and Pat Metheny, and he has played and recorded with guitar legend Domenic Troiano for years. As for the almost exclusively, original material that the band performs with so much energy, excitement, groove and swing, well.... Wayne Buttery used to work with Mr. "Land Of A Thousand Dances" himself, Wilson Pickett. That rather speaks for itself. This Band was built to party! Wayne won't be having a good time if you're not having a good time. Wayne is six-foot five. WAYNE BUTTERY & THE GROOVE PROJECT PERFORM IN THE RHYTHM AND JAZZ CONCERT SERIES.
THE JASON CRAWFORD DUO
" ..... in the Lenny Breau tradition"
Having returned from extensive performing throughout the world in support of Artists like The Platters, Ben Vereen and The Fifth Dimension, Jason is following a personal Jazz career by performing on his custom-made 8-stringed guitar. This instrument allows him to play the bass accompaniment to his chord-melody lines. In 1995, Guitar Player magazine said of Jason, " ...(he) is a most promising chord-melody Jazz player in the Lenny Breau tradition" . His repertoire consists of very classy instrumentals from all the different branches of contemporary Jazz. Jason has become a mainstay of many of the regional Jazz festivals and he will be accompanied by one of Huronia's busiest "first-call" drummers during the Festival this year, Bruce Campbell. Campbell's musical career has taken him into as many directions as there are forms of music. With a combination of creative sensitivity, complete command of his instrument, and no musical prejudices, Bruce is as equally at home playing in Big Bands as he is in Jason's intimate Salon Jazz. THE JASON CRAWFORD DUO PERFORM IN THE ARTISTES CANADA CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY BELL CANADA.
KELLY DAVIES BAND & THE DIRTY LITTLE SWING THING
Dedicated To the Memory Of Chris Fournier
Guitarist-vocalist and percussionist, Kelly Davies, leads this quintet of multi-instrumentalists through a smorgasbord of musical influences and contemporary musical idioms. Combining Dance music with Jazz, Blues and Rock music, and then blending that combination with Swing music....well, you can see why this band is so popular on the Dunlop Street circuit in Barrie and throughout Huronia.
With Mark Hathaway, on keyboards and tenor sax; Chris Lesso, on drums; Jean Arcand, on lead guitar; Fraser Gauthier, on electric bass; Kelly and the boys have matured into a tight, cohesive, well-organized ensemble that is dynamic and exciting. All band members are involved in various aspects of the music industry - Kelly and Fraser are both graduates of Humber College and Mark is a graduate of York University- and both Mark and Chris have turned their attention to providing musical instruction as well. In the vocals department, Kelly has developed a rich tenor voice, and he sings with power, articulation and great phrasing! The big question now is, "When are they going to make a recording?".
The Jazz and Blues Arts require a constant infusion of newness and Kelly Davies & The Dirty Kittle Swing Thing - with their captivating, inspired approach to modern music - is a welcome addition to this year's Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival.
The sudden loss of saxophonist, Chris Fournier, this past year - an original member of The Dirty Little Swing Thing team - has prompted the surviving members to dedicate their Festival performances to his memory. KELLY DAVIES & THE DIRTY LITTLE SWING THING PERFORM IN THE SHOWCASE HURONIA CONCERT SERIES.
THE DIALTONES
" ....rock the house"
"Blues Parlour" co-founders Mike Battram and Hugh Hardy have both branched off into new musical ventures throughout the band"s career. Hugh"s latest offering is The Dialtones, and the concept this outing is to "shake it up with a mixture of Blues and Roots Rock". Teaming up with bass veteran, Mark Gelinas; vocalist, Bob Brown; and drummer, Dale Taylor, Hugh handles the traditional and slide guitar responsibilities.
Based on Hardy's extraordinary feel for the Blues guitar solo and the explosive delivery of his musical ideas, The Dialtones promises Festival audiences solid, innovative and exciting performances that are guaranteed to "rock the house"! THE DIALTONES PERFORM IN THE SHOWCASE HURONIA CONCERT SERIES SPONSORED BY RE/MAX CHAY REALTY INC.
THE PHIL DISERA QUARTET
"accessible, easy-listening Jazz
There was a time when the year 1984 loomed as something less than auspicious, as something foreboding, for readers of George Orwell's famous work. Well, as it turned out, the stars were well aligned for humanity after all, and particularly for Toronto native, Phil Disera. For it was in 1984 that Phil - armed with an Honours Graduate in Music Performance from Humber College, extensive classical training on the guitar and his natural gifts as a composer - entered the music profession.
Little did Phil know that as he put pen to paper and began to compose a collection of pieces that best communicated his innermost passions and thoughts, that he was helping to set the stage for the new "Smooth Jazz" phenomenon that would captivate North America ten to fifteen years later. The result of his efforts was a beautifully crafted recording of lyrical, Latin-influenced music titled "Inside Outside". Disera's initial opus was so well received that it was picked up by a Barrie radio station - at that time known as 93.1 FM CHAY - and released through its "Project Easy" programme.
Through the years, Phil has continued to write and arrange compositions that have a decidedly New Age emphasis, and which continue to keep him performing either in concert or in his busy convention showcase schedule. Phil wants to communicate a greater personal intimacy in his music without sacrificing any musical intensity. His goal: "accessible, easy listening Jazz". And that's just what Smooth Jazz is all about. For a man with a deep commitment to human welfare - and especially his own family - he should have no difficulty in meeting his objectives.
The Phil Disera Quartet will perform in the ARTISTES CANADA CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY BELL CANADA
THE RONNIE DOUGLAS BLUES BAND
The integrity and commitment that Maple Blues Award and Aboriginal Awards winner, Ronnie Douglas, brings to his performances are obvious in the passion with which he sings and in the thoughtful elegance of his guitar solos. Not only is he a practitioner of the Art, Ronnie has taken the time to earn himself a graduate certificate in the history of Jazz and Blues.
Fast becoming a musical force throughout Canada with the success of his recordings, his repertoire encompasses Delta Blues, Chicago Blues and contemporary Blues. Latterly, the new "Big Brother" recording - dedicated to his Fine Artist-musician-brother, Larry - has claimed Best Canadian Debut Album and No. 2 spot in Best C.D.s Of The Year by Vancouver’s "Real Blues" Magazine. In addition, he has garnered the Best New Canadian Talent honour for himself and his band.
Ronnie, in never forgetting the origins of his chosen music, is, himself, an original. He is accompanied by long-time associates Dave Hewitt, on drums, and Peter Loudon, on electric bass. As a special concert treat, Ronnie will have his aforementioned brother - both Ronnie and Larry reside in Mnjinkaning First Nation - on lead guitar, and the young, up-and-coming Blues guitar hero, Murray Sylvester who is from Christian Island. THE RONNIE DOUGLAS BLUES BAND PERFORMS IN THE CASINO RAMA FIRST PEOPLE’S DAY CONCERT SERIES
"FIRE" - THE ULTIMATE TRIBUTE TO JIMI HENDRIX
"purr like a kitten - pounce like a tiger"
HE'S BACK...... AGAIN!!! To captivate the City of Barrie one more time. He can purr like a kitten - pounce like a tiger. He's outrageous, outlandish, outstanding....... and he's ours! At least for a concert Sunday June 15, on Father's Day. The winner of The Prix de Merit V Award - for his classic rendition of the Jimi Hendrix concert experience in 2000 - gets out his headband and tie-dyed shirt and, and ........
It seems incongruous, when one looks back into popular music history, that an Artist who was to completely revolutionize the way we listen to music - and more specifically Blues-Rock music - should have had to perform as an opening act for one of the most puerile musical experiments ever concocted by the American culture machine. The Artist was Jimi Hendrix. The novelty act was The Monkees. And in order to promote himself and his band, "The Experience", Hendrix was reduced to touring throughout the United States with the mindless trivia that was The Monkees.
Wouldn't
you know it, they did it again! A movie was made on The Monkee's career - such
as it was - and the producers of the film needed a Jimi Hendrix. Enter Canada's
own Tony Springer. For years, Tony has been performing a concert simply titled
"Fire", as a tribute to the father of contemporary guitar playing. With his wild
good looks, his boundless energy, his complete command of the electric guitar
and his penchant for the eccentric, Tony Springer is the definitive Jimi Hendrix.
His magnetic stage presence coupled with an ability to mesmerize audiences, bedazzle
other musicians and leave the girls screaming for more was what the Hendrix experience
was all about.... and is all about.
Fuelled by the powerful drumming of long-time
bandmate, John Bouvette, and the thunderous foundation of electric bass master,
Gunther Kappell, being witness to Tony Springer’s "Fire" is like stepping back
in time. TONY SPRINGER PERFORMS IN THE GREAT CANADIAN GUITARIST CONCERT SERIES.
THE LEVON ICHKHANIAN QUARTET
"When playing music........you can not lie"
Levon Ichkhanian has been recognized as a musical ambassador for Canada, and this reputation is well deserved. Two critically acclaimed recordings, a heavy concert schedule, invitations to music conventions and educational symposia throughout the United States, and a number of product endorsements are just some of the reasons that he is so highly regarded in the North American music industry. His debut CD, "After Hours", met with high praise and earned him a nomination for the Armenian Music Awards. It also reached Number 1 on the Top 10 Jazz charts. His latest production, "travels", follows the model of his first recording in acquiring some of the finest musicians that our nation has to offer - legendary Québec bassist Alain Caron, bassist George Koller and drummer Wilson Laurencin, to name but a few - in realizing his own unique vision in Jazz.
Ichkhanian started his amazing journey into the music industry in Lebanon and immigrated to Canada at age 12. He received the Canadian All Star Jazz Award at age 16. In the course of his development as an instrumentalist and composer, he has studied with a variety of world-renowned artists and educators.
A multi-instrumentalist on stringed instruments, Levon's instrument of choice is the electric guitar which he plays with all the deftness and technical brilliance of the virtuoso. And Levon is at home in all musical idioms, from Latin and Blues to Jazz and Rock.
He has traveled and performed extensively throughout the world and has shared the stage with many prominent international artists. He has given command performances for the Heads of State and dignitaries from Armenia, Greece and Lebanon. Levon has also received the Governor-General of Canada’s acknowledgement for musical excellence.
Continually seeking out other avenues of creative endeavour, Ichkhanian has also branched out into the world of film and television. He has written the scores for, and performed on, many movie soundtracks and he has appeared on several television shows.
"When playing music, it’s one of the few places where you cannot lie. It’s going to come out in your music, especially in Jazz, where you’re improvising. It has a lot to do with your own character."
With such an exotic sound and accomplished personal style, this unique Artist has got to be experienced live. The Levon Ichkhanian Quartet performs in THE GREAT CANADIAN GUITARIST CONCERT SERIES.

JUST JAMMIN’
Rhythm ‘n Youth
The Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival has always encouraged the efforts of young people in their pursuit of musical self-expression. When that desire in the young is encouraged and given practical application in our schools, the results can be pretty exciting. Prince Of Wales Public School teacher, Karina Vasquez, believed in that possibility, and a couple of years ago, gathered a group of energetic and enthusiastic10 to 12 year-old students together to form a djembe percussion ensemble.
Using the lunch-hours at school to learn, practice and refine their rhythm skills, Just Jammin’ is ready, willing and able to be a part of all the Festival Fun and activity. The group had their debut in 2002, and were greeted with enthusiastic audience appreciation for all their fiery rhythms and their solo and ensemble performances. Just Jammin’will appear this year at the "OUT TO LUNCH" CONCERT SERIES SPONSORED BY THE DOWNTOWN B.I.A. and THE SHOWCASE HURONIA CONCERT SERIES.
RAVEN KANATAKTA
" casual deference.....youthful enthusiasm"
Artists in all disciplines that start their lives in la belle province have a unique creativity coupled with a concentrated determination, the result of which is reflected in the clearly imaginative, sometimes iconoclastic and always expressive works in their chosen Art-form. Guitarist-vocalist Raven Kanatakta is an example of the fresh, confident ideas that emanate from his origins in Winneway, Québec in conjunction with his Anishnabe/Onkwehowe heritage.
Blues-influenced original compositions that are enriched by Raven’s whimsical application of "all that Jazz" music education at Boston’s famous Berklee School of Music are intriguing and personal, and allow him to explore the full range of his vocal abilities. From a gentle, almost falsetto soprano to a deep, resonant baritone, Kanatakta applies his vocal facility to the interesting variety of his music in a series of delightful surprises. As an instrumentalist, he applies slide techniques and finger-style guitar picking to his obviously jazz-influenced accompaniments. As a soloist, he has much of the technical skill, humour and creative aplomb of a youthful Jaco Pastorious, who was known to quip that "it ain’t braggin’ if you can back it up".
With the casual deference and gentle, youthful enthusiasm which permeate his stage shows, Raven is one of a number of emerging Indigenous Artists who have taken Jazz and Blues music and applied their considerable creativity, and cultural characteristics and predilections, to enlarging and enriching the Art. Raven Kanatakta performs in THE CASINO RAMA FIRST PEOPLE’S DAY CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY THE NEW VR.
SHOSHONA KISH
Shoshona Kish utilizes music performance as one of a number of media that allow her the opportunity of "finding unique ways of expressing ideas which are timeless". And the musics which she chooses in realizing her vision are Jazz , Blues and Folk. As a singer-songwriter, she accompanies herself on guitar and employs the talents of Raven Kanatakta as guitar and dobro soloist. Like many philosopher-artists before her, Shoshona seeks to deal with the significant social issues of the present while acknowledging the inevitable, unquestioned element within her complex need for artistic expression. A multi-disciplinary Artist, Kish performs her original compositions with a calm and deliberate self-assurance and an evocative vocalization which encourages a playful musical exchange with Kanatakta. More of a musical catalyst than a dominating force, Shoshona Kish in concert with her Raven is "ever-more". Shoshona Kish performs in THE CASINO RAMA FIRST PEOPLE’S DAY CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY THE NEW VR.
THE LORNE LOFSKY TRIO
Dedicated To The Memory Of Jerry Fuller
Guitarist, Lorne Lofsky, has been playing and teaching Jazz for more than 20 years. Throughout his career he has had the opportunity to play and record with some of the finest Jazz musicians from across Canada and the international scene. Touring Europe with Oscar Peterson was definitely a highlight of his extensive and busy career. Lofsky and tenor saxophone master, Kirk MacDonald, won a Juno Award for their recording, "The Atlantic Sessions", and they have also produced another recording for the Jazz Inspiration label, which will be available on C.D. in the near future.
Other Artists who Lofsky has performed with are Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass, Bob Brookmeyer and bassist extraordinaire, Ray Brown. As a music educator, he divides his time between The University of Toronto and York University, as well as providing private instruction. His teaching practice includes working with Jazz ensembles, as well as guitar instruction . High on everybody’s list of superb accompanists and inspired soloists, Lorne Lofsky continues to find the time to play in many of the fine Jazz venues that can be found in and around the Toronto area.
This year’s edition of the trio is composed of the great Kieran Overs playing acoustic bass, and Time Warp alumnus, Barry Elmes, on drums. Their concert will be a poignant reminder of the remarkable Jazz performance in 2000 when Lofsky was accompanied by the late, great, legendary drummer Jerry Fuller. The Festival dedicates this concert to his memory. THE LORNE LOFSKY TRIO PERFORMS IN THE GREAT CANADIAN GUITARISTS CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY YORKVILLE SOUND.
THE NOT AFFILIATED BIG BAND
"The debuting all-age band is from the Markham area and has a wide repertoire....They sound rehearsed, they swing, they're tight!"
- Geoff Chapman, Jazz Critic for the Toronto Star
Youthful enthusiasm for Big band Jazz is alive and well, and is presented for all to enjoy, in this 20-piece student-based orchestra based in north Toronto. A combination of university and college-trained musicians are guided through intriguing, sophisticated arrangements of Swing, Latin, Standard and Contemporary Jazz classics by the seasoned leadership of the project. The band has played numerous weddings, benefits, street festivals, dances and Jazz festivals including concerts at the Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival, the Beaches Jazz Festival in Toronto and The Orillia Jazz Festival.
If you enjoy the exciting sound of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and one of those hip Toronto rhythm sections, put this concert high on your list of Festival "Must See" events! THE NOT AFFILIATED BIG BAND PERFORMS IN THE ARTISTES CANADA CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY BELL CANADA
THE PAPPY JOHNS BAND featuring MURRAY PORTER
"you don’t hear a voice like his everyday"
Hot on the heels of concert appearances in Chicago, Ottawa and Winnipeg, The Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival VIII is privileged to be able to present The Pappy Johns Band. The recent success of their first recording, "Blame It On Monday" - which features some incredible original compositions -, garnered the ensemble four Canadian Aboriginal Awards in 2002, and earned them an invitation to the Chicago Blues Festival this past May - only the second Canadian Artist to have ever achieved this distinction! Their latest recording will be completed in late June of this year.
Anyone looking for the heir apparent to B. B. King’s evocative tenor voice need seek no further. Lead vocalist, Faron Johns, has captured all the anguish, warmth and power of the great Blues legend’s singing style. This man is a great Blues singer; you don’t hear a voice like his everyday! Added to that is a stage presence that exudes all the quiet confidence and gentle playfulness of an Artist who understands his Art-form completely. The infectious, smokey grooves of drummer, Oren Doxtator, and electric bassist, Don Powless, provide the rhythmic foundation for the ever-popular Murray Porter - on keyboards and vocals - and for guitarist, Joe Mahoud, the newest member of group. Joe’s obvious Jazz influences have resulted in imaginative solos and intriguing guitar hooks which propel the band to new, musically sophisticated heights and continued popularity.
A Six Nations musical institution, The Pappy Johns Band has been presenting its own unique interpretation of the Blues and Rhythm and Blues in nightclubs and on concert stages on both sides of the 49th parallel for the past twenty-five years. Longevity in the music industry has done nothing to slow down this superb ensemble, and it remains a vital, energetic, creative musical force to this day. Exciting, well-executed musical arrangements and mature original compositions are just two of the reasons why this band is so influential in the world of Indigenous musical Arts. THE PAPPY JOHNS BAND PERFORMS IN THE CASINO RAMA FIRST PEOPLE’S DAY CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY THE NEW VR.
RED SPIRIT DRUM
DRUMMERS, SINGERS AND DANCERS
Red Spirit Drum came together as a young drum group over two years ago. Members of the Ojibway, Cree and Mohawk Nations, they emerged out of the drum practices activities in the Youth Programme at the Native Centre and Child and Family Services in Toronto.
The ensemble is continually invited to do cultural presentations for their own communities, schools, Pow-Wows and special occasions. Highlights for Red Spirit Drum include performances for members of the International Olympics Committee, the Pope - during World Youth Day - and special events for The City of Toronto. The power and drama of the drummers is complemented by their soaring melodic chants as they sing of their spirituality and deep personal relationship with reality. Responding to this irresistible call to celebrate, the dancers perform the many different steps of the Indigenous dances in a spontaneous display of free expression. The breathtaking colours and materials of their heritage costumes combined with the swirl of their hypnotic movements is absolutely extraordinary.
Red Spirit Drum Drummers Singers and Dancers present a joyous, captivating and profoundly moving experience, which has the ability to resonate within us all. Drummers Steve Teekens, Sonny McDow and Shawn Sackeney are joined by dancers Daniel Redstar, Melissa McNeal, Cheryl Rivers and Katie Longboat. THE RYAN ROGERS QUINTET
Ryan Rogers is an exciting example of what can happen when a young Northern boy gets captivated by music, especially Jazz music. Born in Elliot Lake, - and as a teenager, an émigré to North Bay - Ryan took up the double bass and played in school and local Jazz ensembles, in addition to joining the community symphony orchestra. A scholarship allowed him to pursue his musical goals at Humber College, in Toronto, where he studied with bass player-educators who rank in the "who’s-who" of Canadian Jazz music - Don Thompson , Mike Downes and Pat Collins. Private lessons with the phenomenal Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and the late Ray Brown - a Jazz legend in his own right - have added to the development of this inspired, new musical talent.
Rogers has been active in the gigging department as well, and leads a variety of Jazz ensembles - from duo’s to septets - in a wide variety of nightclub shows, fund-raisers and special events. His quintet consists of strong accompanists and soloists on guitar, tenor saxophone, trumpet and drums. Ryan and his fellow Jazz peers perform their swinging, highly accessible mainstream and be-bop repertoire in a well-executed manner which is confident, mature and professional. THE RYAN ROGERS QUINTET PERFORMS IN THE CASINO RAMA FIRST PEOPLE’S DAY CONCERTS SERIES PRESENTED BY THE NEW VR.
DON ROSS
"a Mikm’aq Aboriginal mother gave her Scottish immigrant husband a son"
When American Jazz bass guru and educator, Mark Egan - of The Pat Metheny Group fame -, seeks a musical audience and exchange with another Artist, that is indeed high approbation, praise and respect.
Canadian guitarist, Don Ross, has reached the summit of musical endeavour as an instrumentalist and composer and has been the object of the foregoing attention. The origins of this Canadian marvel began innocently enough in 1960 when a Mikm’aq Aboriginal mother gave her Scottish immigrant husband a son....... and the world, an Artist of unqualified virtuosity, creativity and genius.
An unprecedented two-time U.S. National Finger-style Guitar Champion - in 1988 and 1996 - and both a "professionally self-taught" and formally educated graduate of music from The University of Toronto, Don Ross has made eight critically acclaimed and commercially successful recordings, the latest of which is "Huron Street" - a revamped reprise compilation of twelve recorded-works - charted in the top ten in Billboard Magazine’s New Age category. SECOND-HAND BLUES
"a smouldering, Funky Blues experience"
Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? "Mad Dog" veterans Hugh Kilvert and John van Der Lind - from Huronia’s legendary tribute to Joe Cocker - have joined with bassist, Bill Schindle; "Little Avenue" drummer, Doug Bruton; and keyboardist, Ron Dick, to form the most multi-faceted Blues-based ensemble on the Huronia music scene today. Van der Lind and Bruton alternately handle the drumming chores and the vocals, and the real surprise in their shows is the emergence of Doug as a mature and exciting Blues singer, as a counterpoint to John’s captivating vocal qualities and astonishing performance. Kilvert, Schindle and Ron Dick provide all the great grooves and textures that have helped develop the group’s large fan base.
Drawing upon their deep musical maturity - and influences as wide-ranging as the Allman Brothers, Sam and Dave, and, of course, Joe Cocker - this band is a smouldering, Funky Blues experience that you don’t want to miss! And you don’t have to, because SECOND-HAND BUES WILL BE PERFORMING IN THE SHOWCASE HURONIA CONCERTS SERIES.
THE BERNIE SENENSKY SEPTET
"the big Senensky sound"
"The Best of the Best." - Buddy DeFranco
"One of the finest pianists I have worked with in my career." - Elvin Jones
"I could just sit and listen to him play all day." - Bill Evans
"Bernie's awesome piano virtuosity places him at the pinnacle of Jazz greatness."
- Tisziji Munoz
"Jazz piano is alive and well in Canada." - Contemporary Keyboard Magazine
Bernie Senensky has had an incredible musical career, which began when he was only 17 years old. He became part of the Jazz scene in Winnipeg and Edmonton before he moved East to Toronto to build a reputation, that to this day, continues to grow and places him with the élite in Canadian Jazz. And build a reputation he did when he got many opportunities to accompany major American Jazz Artists and Canadian singers that came to Toronto to perform.
He not only is an amazing pianist, but a composer, arranger and recording Artist as well. In the early 1970’s, Bernie formed a trio of his own. A number of years later, in 1979, he joined one of Canada’s most popular Jazz ensembles, The Moe Koffman Quintet.
He has recorded nine albums since 1975, two of which received Juno Award nominations. Bernie also has the distinction of being the only Canadian guest on "Oscar Peterson Presents," which was broadcast on national television. Latterly, Bernie has made his way into the film industry by composing musical scores, conducting, and performing.
Senensky once described his musical style as, "…an amalgamation of the legacies," which some of the artists who have influenced him created. He has collaborated with many other Artists as well as working and playing with various sized ensembles - trios, quartets, quintets , and of course, septets which he will be introducing to the Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival this year.
Performing in the septet will be one Canada’s premier tenor saxophonists, Kirk MacDonald - an incredible talent in his own right - who has made a significant reputation for himself as a leader as well as a sideman. The balance of the ensemble is composed of the "who’s-who" in Canadian Jazz: Brian O’Kane; trumpet and flugelhorn, Barry Romberg; drums, Duncan Hopkins; acoustic bass and one each of the top Canadian trombonists and alto saxophonists that Bernie works with. All of this creative talent is harnessed to create "the big Senensky sound" for his abundance of fascinating and high-excitement original compositions - the real hallmark of the true musical genius.
Bernie has two new recordings that are due for release very soon. He is very enthusiastic about the C.D. releases as well as performing at the Festival. His concert will be presented at The Centre Stage on Saturday afternoon as part of the ARTISTES CANADA CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY BELL CANADA.
THE LYNE TREMBLAY QUARTET
BRIDGING THE GAP WITH MUSIC
Originally from Québec, Lyne Tremblay has made her home, her career and her enviable reputation in Toronto. She has performed in everything from dinner theatres to conventions to the broadway musical, "Cats" - Lyne played the role of the Siamese cat at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto. She combines a variety of elements in her shows which include music, theatre, surprise, humour, drama, tragedy and dance.
The big excitement in Tremblay’s career is the release of her first recording, "break ‘n enter", this May. Immediately, it went into the play rotation on 91.1 JAZZ FM in Toronto and nationally on the CBC’s RADIO ONE. A delightful mix of anglo and francophone material plus intriguing original compositions ensures that her inaugural opus will meet with a broad base of enthusiasm from music lovers across Canada.
With a sensual, smokey voice that lends itself wonderfully to Jazz, Lyne captivates every member of her audience. Her repertoire of great chansons Français et chansons de Jazz en Francais is a decidedly eclectic blend of material to which she has added her own unique style.
In keeping with the vision of The Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival, Lyne Tremblay wants to help bridge the gap between Québecois and English Canada. She believes that as Canadians, we have a lot to share with each other within our own country. She wants to appeal to the Franco-Ontarians and make them feel "chez maison" by performing original Québecois and European French compositions that, by their very nature, put a different perspective on things..... a more cosmopolitan flavour.
Lyne is accompanied by the elegant Scott Marshall Trio. Scott, tenor, alto and soprano saxophones; Marcel Aucoin, piano; Wes Neal, bass; are highly accomplished instrumentalists, and the combination of the their sensitive, swinging, exciting arrangements and Lyne’s evocative vocalise creates a passionate, musical pas de deux. The Lyne Tremblay Quartet performs in THE ARTISTES CANADA CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY BELL CANADA.

ROBIN H. S. MUNRO
For all the risky business present in the exploration of the multi-dimensionalism that is a contemporary Jazz and Blues festival, it is just plain nice to be able to enjoy classic and romantic Jazz songs performed by a quintet of mature Jazz musicians. Based due south of Barrie, in Aurora, The Alias Tim Reed Quintet - presumably one of the members of the band has a little problem with our judicial system - is lead through a repertoire of familiar Jazz and Latin Standards by the lovely and enchanting vocalist, Renelle Rico-Guererro. The rest of the ensemble consists of bassist, Rob Hunter; guitarist, John Schick; pianist, Tim Reed; and drummer, Lawrence Moule. The quintet s obvious enjoyment in performing together adds to their refined and sophisticated presentation. Great vocal Jazz, done with class!
This act was widely regarded as one of the most exciting Rockin Blues bands to participate this past Winter in the February Blues Festival V. Well, we re going to welcome them back to a more hospitable time of year as The Basement Blues Band comes in from the cold to perform at this year s Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival VII. The band is from the Newmarket area and plays a diverse mixture of traditional Blues and Rhythm and Blues from the Sixties, the Seventies and the Eighties. A solid, tight rhythm section lead by bassist, Jo Gravelle, fuels the high energy vocals and fiery lead guitar solos of Steve O Brien, the equally compelling guitar work of Steve Whittick, and the powerhouse drumming of Rino Matarazzo that makes the band so entertaining. If you re looking for danceable, party Blues..... look for The Basement Blues Band!
The name of Michael s new C.D., The Journey , says more about the lengths he will travel to, than might at first be apparent. It seems that no distance is too far or job too small when it comes to performing the music that he has devoted the latter part of his life to. An articulate, spontaneous, yet thoughtful guitarist - and co-founder of the local Jazz ensemble, Jazzmine, many years ago - Michael made his way to Toronto to perfect his Art and discover the creative muse within himself. To have penned every piece on his initial recording, and not even toss in one Jazz Standard, takes a lot of courage and confidence. Courage and confidence he has got, and Michael s unique approach to instrumental Jazz - lush chords, intriguing melodic improvisations and his distinctive tone and style on the guitar - have earned him the respect of many of his peers on the Toronto music scene. Drummer, Howard Gaul, and acoustic bassist, Henry Hellig, and tenor saxophonist, Bob Brough, are just some of the Artists who have not only performed on his C.D., but join him in Concert, too! The Michael Brown group will perform inTHE "OUT TO LUNCH" JAZZ AND BLUES CONCERT SERIES SPONSRED BY THE DOWNTOWN BARRIE B.I.A.
The music students of David Chun take centre stage at The Light Tower Restaurant on Essa Road. Music teacher, David Chun, presents the talents of his music studio's guitar students in solo, duet, and ensemble performances of music with Jazz and Blues influences, in addition to the more traditional compositions of the guitar repertoire.
The Kelly Davies Trio performs inTHE "OUT TO LUNCH" JAZZ AND BLUES CONCERT SERIES SPONSORED BY THE DOWNTOWN BARRIE B.I.A.

Jo Gravelle, of The Basement Blues Band, and Jay Pegg, of the popular group, Heartland, pick up the acoustic guitars and harmonica and take us down the Mississippi River - or any other water-course they happen to fancy - in presenting the Roots and Delta Blues that they so enjoy. Veterans of the February Blues V, Jo and Jay get to perform street-side at The Second Cup during this more hospitable time of year. From the vast range of acoustic Blues that has emerged through the decades, Jo and Jay cherry-pick the best examples of this enduring Artform. And they are not above taking a contemporary Rhythm and Blues song and giving it the Delta treatment. If you like your Blues served up close and personal, don t miss Jo and Jay!
The accent is on fun and familiarity when Joe and an assortment of talented, musical buddies get together to make music. From Stevie Ray to Santana, the grooves are great and the entertainment exciting! If you re going out for a night of Festival Fun, don t miss Joe Huron and Friends.
Tone. Feel. Articulation. Technique. Brilliant ideas. These are the qualities that set an instrumentalist apart from the crowd. And these are the very qualities that have emerged in Joe Huron through the years. He is one of the finest Jazz guitarists in all of Huronia. But his pre-eminence in this community will not let him set himself apart from the crowd. He is equally at home performing with his students, fellow guitarists or his own stellar trio. He is well matched by the irrepressibly creative Tim Moore on drums and the equally capable Kene Hyatt on the upright and the electric bass. They perform in concert in THE SHOWCASE HURONIA CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY THE NEW VR.

The Barrie Jazz And Blues Festival has always encouraged the efforts of young people in their pursuit of musical self-expression. When that desire in the young is encouraged and given practical application in our schools, the results can be pretty exciting. Prince Of Wales Public School teacher, Karina Vasquez, believed in that, and a year ago, gathered a group of energetic and enthusiastic10 to 12 year-old students together to form a djembe percussion ensemble. Using the lunch-hours at school to learn, practice and refine their rhythm skills, Just Jammin is ready, willing and able to be a part of this year s fun and excitement.
Barely one month old, the Chris Lesso Trio is takin it to the streets. But what would you expect of a New Blood Artist? Young. Energetic. Well-schooled in the Jazz Arts. Prepared to take chances. Improvise. Go where, hopefully, no man has gone before. Those are the very criteria for invigorating Jazz Music, and they always have been. If Charlie and Dizzy and Max and Bud and Mingus hadn t thrown off the restrictions under which they functioned, well we wouldn t have The Golden Age Of Jazz, now, would we and we wouldn t have had The Greatest Jazz Concert Ever ? Chris Lesso, on drums; John-Allen Bridges, on acoustic bass: Sudbury Jean, on guitar, utilize spontaneity and intuition in their approach Jazz Standards and Blues material. They perform in concert in THE SHOWCASE HURONIA CONCERT SERIES SPONSORED BY THE NEW VR.

Having been at the forefront of many musical trends and ideas, bandleader and arranger Louis Lefaive steps down from his role as leader of his ensemble, The Kings Of Swing, and presents the personal side of his Jazz interests. An accomplished pianist and vocalist, Louis provides new insights into the vast repertoire of Jazz, Show tunes and Popular material that he is so familiar with. Definitely a class act! Accompanying Louis during his show at Abbott’s of Craighurst will be some talented student guests.
Three fine vocalists guarantee rich harmonic textures in any band, but when this is applied to Rhythm and Blues....well, the results are bound to be exciting! Sophisticated Jazz entertainment demands a close bond between the performer and the audience. Through superb phrasing, facile vocalizations and an accomplished piano accompaniment, Shawn and his accompanists are able to communicate with their listeners all the fun, the drama, the swagger and the yearning that is at the core of the successful Jazz songs. Shawn’s appreciation of the great singers of the past is apparent in his complete sincerity in performance.
Drummer, Tim Moore, has long been regarded as a 'first call' by fellow musicians requiring a dynamic, sensitive, creative and accomplished percussionist. He's worked with some of the finest artists this country has to offer because he's regarded as one of the best. A fascinating composer and arranger, Tim joins forces with one of Barrie's leading guitarists and a composer in his own right, Joe Huron, and bassist, Kene Hyatt in a presentation of contemporary Jazz originals culled from their debut C.D. "....Finally" and select performance pieces and Jazz Standards.
If ever there was a re-incarnation of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band of the mid to late 1960s, it’s The Michael Pickett Band. From Michaels’s husky, falsetto-laced vocals to his percussive harmonica style to Shawn Kellerman’s searing lead guitar solos, this band combines all the best ingredients of great Chicago Blues. And then there’s the Jimmy Reed inspired harmonica wails and the hypnotizing, repetitive rhythm section arrangements so reminiscent of the later Butterfield recordings. And maybe some Lou Reed and Tom Waites. And was that Buddy Miles and The Electric Flag? This band is fantastic! As their recordings, "Blues Money" and "Conversation With The Blues", will testify. Another Festival "must see".
Central Collegiate is the home base for this seven-piece student Jazz ensemble that just keeps getting better and better. They are a Saturday morning Jazz Band Concert Series tradition at The Centre Stage at Heritage Park. Their concert in THE JAZZ BAND CONCERT SERIES IS SPONSORED BY ASSOCIATED INTEGRATED SYSTEMS.
To every thing there is a season. In Lynn’s case, the season to become a Jazz stylist came after a variety of careers in the management echelons of the corporate world. Like great wine, her voice has a complexity that enchants and satisfies, and remains with you long after the last note has faded into the silence. The added treat is that Lynn Ross is so much fun! She loves to entertain! Her energy and enthusiasm are infectious. So keep the requests coming, then sit back and enjoy a great Jazz voice on the very cusp of stardom. Her accompanists are culled from the finest musicians in the Jazz scene today. An absolute Festival "must see"!
A Barrie Music Awards recipient, Mark Rutherford is joined by his lovely daughter, Cassandra, in a presentation of great original and familiar vocal Jazz compositions. As an added treat, Mark is capable of fine vocal performances, too. For distinctive and inventive Jazz, you can't beat any of The Rutherfords’ performances!

The Andrew Scott Trio Swings! .....and when this guitarist wants to make you smile, he just unleashes one of his rapid-fire volleys of musical inspiration and then retires to let the other members of the trio expand on his thematic ideas. Accompanied by acoustic bass and piano, Andrew negotiates his way through the challenges of the piano-guitar paring with grace and deference. Be it hot Latin pieces or tender ballads, his Originals and Standards all have a freshness about them that is invigorating. In addition to his extensive touring and concert performances, his composition credits in the broadcast and movie industry are remarkable for an Artist this early in his career. So pack up all your workday cares and woe and check out the Andrew Scott Trio on June 14 at The Barrie Public Library in THE "HIGH NOON" JAZZ CONCERT SERIES SPONSORED BY THE ROTARY CLUB OF BARRIE.
Having developed such a solid reputation as the bass player and second vocalist for the very popular group, Blues Parlour, many would never know that John Shand is a fine saxophonist and an awesome guitarist. John dons the six string to introduce his new Jazz trio - Erwin Giles, on drums, and Carl Rabiowitz, on electric bass - to the lunch bunch that populates the downtown every day. Expect to hear Jazz Standards, with vocals included, along with up-tempo Swing and Blues favourites. Perennial Festival Favourites, Simcoe Sound, perform as a trio, quartet or quintet. This highly-entertaining Jazz ensemble plays Swing, Blues, Dixieland and Bebop. Their all-encompassing repertoire and light-hearted approach to their shows have made the group very popular throughout Huronia. In addition to fine vocals and a hip Toronto rhythm section, Joe Ciufo’s saxophone, clarinet and flute playing are what goodtime Jazz is all about!
Upbeat and entertaining, Peter’s eclectic combo is neither ‘mainstream’ nor ‘Latin’ Jazz. It is a synthesis of elements which include acoustic instrumentation, South-American folk influences, non-Jazz sensibilities and improvisation as conceived by Canadians in a Canadian setting. In other words, the ensembles of saxophonist, Peter Smith, and guitarist, Kevin Laliberté, are both Caliente & Cool. The burning question is, Who is Which?
Mark Danner, head of the music department at St. Peter’s, leads this student Jazz band, another Saturday morning Jazz Band Concert Series tradition. They will also perform during the "Out To Lunch" Concert Series at Memorial Square in downtown Barrie. Their concert in THE JAZZ BAND CONCERT SERIES IS SPONSORED BY ASSOCIATED INTEGRATED SYSTEMS.
A Workshop Wednesday showcase of George's talented students performing in a nightclub environment. These students will be performing solo pieces and duettes in the Jazz and Blues genre.
The diverse musical interests of guitarist, George Wehby, and a variety of area musicians are united in their presentation of World Beat and Blues and Jazz standards in addition to their own original compositions. George finds that the duo combination provides sufficient opportunity for improvisation and exploration. The result ... they are always entertaining. The talent and creativity of this young artist augers well for the future of Jazz and Blues in Barrie. George will be performing with the very bluesy guitar-vocalist, Rick Greensides, in one of his one of his ensembles. And if we’re lucky, piano-picker Peter Wessenger will be on one of the shows.
Mister Excitement, Tony Springer, joins forces with long-time friends John Bouvette, on drums, and musical prodigy Chaz Laurie, on bass, to deliver that great Toronto Rockin' Blues Sound. With three recordings under their belts and U.S. distribution, this act is a "Wild and Spirited" amazing "must see"! Included in his Philthy McNasty’s show on June 16 will be a reprise of his movie performance in "Daydream Believers: The Story Of The Monkees" in which he was chosen to portray the great guitar icon in the early stages of his solo career. Definitely a guitar-burning event!
